We partnered with museum Rotterdam to initiate a unique participation project. The collection of Museum Rotterdam houses over one hundred thousand objects, a wide variety of items ranging from dresses to packing materials, from sculpture to ceramic tiles.
A project where about 3000 people have helped in the creation of this animation. Animation R is an animation project about Rotterdam, by Rotterdam.
Based on the abstract view of the city that we created with Stage 2, this animation needed to show Rotterdam through the eyes of its citizens.
We started with the city of Rotterdam layout from Stage 2. Here, we came up with a number of interesting themes, developed the course of the animation and then printed every frame from the entire animation.
We distributed the frames among the participants. Each participant created their own interpretation of their frame by attaching tracing paper to it and drawing their own design on the overlaying paper. The drawings were then scanned and placed over the animation.
We printed out every frame of the animation (a total of nearly ten thousand frames!) and the Museum of Rotterdam handed out these frames to the participants. They would then colour all the frames, after which the Museum collected them and we would process every drawn frame once we received them. We made sequences of all the drawings, which we then keyed out so we could place them on our 3D footage. For the final result, we textured the scene, removed the gray textures that acted as "colour here" guides and added motion blur and depth of field. As a final touch we colour corrected the animation and custom sound was made and added by sound studio SonicPicnic.
