Client

Together with Museum Rotterdam, we have started a unique participation project. Museum Rotterdam's collection houses more than a hundred thousand objects, a wide variety of objects ranging from dresses to packaging materials, from sculpture to ceramic tiles.

Product

A project where around 3,000 people helped make this animation. Animation R is an animation project about Rotterdam, through Rotterdam.

The goal

Based on the abstract image of the city that we created with Stage 2, this animation was supposed to show Rotterdam through the eyes of citizens.

Our solution

We started with the layout of the city of Rotterdam from Stage 2, where we came up with a number of interesting themes, developed the course of the animation and then printed each frame of the entire animation.

final result

We divided the frameworks among the participants. Each participant made their own interpretation of their frame by sticking tracing paper to it and drawing their own design on the overlapping paper. The drawings were then scanned and placed over the animation.

process

We printed out every frame of the animation (nearly ten thousand frames in total!) and the Museum of Rotterdam distributed these frames to participants. They then coloured all the frames, after which the Museum picked them up and we processed each drawn frame as soon as we received them. We made sequences of all the drawings, which we then excluded so that we could place them on our 3D images. For the end result, we textured the scene, removed the gray textures that guide as “color here”, and added motion blur and depth of field. To top it off, we color-corrected the animation and custom sound was created and added by sound studio SonicPicnic.

outcomes

We are very proud of the all in all intense, complicated, informative and cool collaboration that resulted in this unique and vibrant color animation.
