Zero Emission Lab

animation explanation

Customer

MARIN is a globally recognized top institute for hydrodynamic and nautical research. They operate as an independent, reliable and innovative knowledge partner for the maritime sector, government and society. With the aim of clean, smart and safe shipping and sustainable use of the sea. By combining different methods, they strive for solutions for concept development, design and exploitation.

Topic

Together with the maritime sector, MARIN is building a Zero Emission Lab, where they are developing the “Engine Room of the Future”. With the construction of the lab, MARIN, as the maritime sector, is preparing for the challenge they will face in the maritime energy transition. The goal is to design, build and test prototypes that guarantee reliable operation in the future under realistic conditions.

The goal

The research is important and groundbreaking, but difficult to explain to a non-technical audience. MARIN had to find a way to create support from a general and political audience outside the maritime sector, while still appealing to the maritime sector. With animation, they wanted to visualize the current problem situation, the functioning of the ZEL and the function and value of the research in an understandable way.

Our solution

MARIN tests ships in various conditions. That's why we've created various realistic sailing conditions for different types of ships. With extensive research and new techniques, we have made all elements as realistic as possible. By coordinating this with abstract visuals, there was room to communicate a large amount of information.

final result

By placing the supplied models of the ZEL and the ships in different environments, we have brought the static models to life. The design of the actual test setup was the starting point for visualizing different situations and ship types.

process

To reinforce the animation, we advised and added sound design. The actions that are shown on the screen are brought to life by the added sound effects. Thus, every detail is highlighted and the viewer's attention is drawn.

The visualization of water was an important aspect of the process. With extensive research and new techniques, we have tested various ways to visualize water realistically.

outcomes

In addition to the Dutch and English versions of the animation, we made a social short. For this short, adapted texts were added to the video.

Each project requires a unique approach and solution. Let's talk and discuss how we can help you!
